Below is a "Brand Brief" for Bookship, including references to Pinterest boards we use for inspiration. There is specific guidance about features to avoid or be careful of in the design of the logo towards the end.
"More people reading better books."
We love books. Our mission is to get people reading. We believe books change lives, and the more people reading together, the better. So we're creating ways for people to read more, discover better books, and build better relationships with their friends, family and community through reading. And we donate 10% of our revenue to support 3 great literacy non-profits.
VISION for this app
Bookship is a social reading app that lets readers share their reading experiences. Whether it's reading a great novel with your best friend across the country, a business book with your co-workers, or participating in a neighborhood book club, Bookship enriches your reading experience and your relationships.
Bookship. Better relationships through books.
Friends who want to read together, enriching the reading experience
Book Club members who want more than just a once-a-month meeting
Co-workers who are reading a book together, (e.g. a corporate book club)
People who want support & motivation for reading a challenging book or to support learning
(Eventually): meet strangers who want to read the same book or love the same authors
People using this app might be reading on an eReader or a physical book - either is fine
People using this app may well not be in the same geography - even half a world away
A note on the name, "Bookship":
The English suffix -ship means "of a condition, state, character or skill". For example, Relationship, FriendShip, Fellowship, Craftsmanship, Leadership, Partnership. Bookship is a noun - a "book relationship", or a skill, e.g. "good with books".
There are some alternate things people may think of.
1. a literal Ship - e.g. a boat or a rocket ship.
2. In Fan Fiction, "Shipping" something means to like something, in particular a romantic relationship. It can be either a noun ("I see a 'ship developing between Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.") or a verb ("I 'ship Ron/Hermione").
So, logos with ships or rocket ships will be considered, but potential users of the app should not come away from the logo thinking this is a boating app or a Science Fiction app! And logos based on the "fan fiction" interpretation are also OK, but users should not come away thinking this is a YA (Young Adult) Romance or Dating app :).
Also, logos with boring clip-art style books won't do well. Unless they are visually *very* interesting.

BRAND PERSONALITY (what we're aiming for)
Sophisticated, a little bit intellectual, a bit bookish.
Serious. But Fun & Chatty
A bit ironic and quirky
Here’s a mood board of feelings we hope to evoke with this app: https://www.pinterest.com/viking291…ood-board/
Here’s a set of logo designs that caught our eye. You don’t need to follow these styles, this is simply so you know things we like. These are in no particular order:
Books Change Lives
Experiences are more valuable than Things.
We value the act of creation. Whether it's a product, a service, or an experience.
We value freedom and privacy
Live with Honor and Humbleness.
Do the right thing, especially when it's hard or nobody's looking
Time is our most valuable commodity.
Laugh a lot.
LOGO DESIGN SPECIFICS
The mark will be used for the App Store, as well as the website, blog, etc. The primary usage is for the App Store and the app itself, so the mark needs to be instantly recognizable and legible at any scale. The primary version should be hi res, but should be scalable and look great at smaller sizes (e.g. on your phone's home screen), or even as a favicon.
Colors: the brand palette (colors & typography) is not yet defined. Pick ones you think fit the brand.
Styles: Any style that works in concert with the brand brief is acceptable. We’re intrigued by the possibilities of a vintage or illustrated style, or a vibrant & contrasty modern look. But those are just intriguing ideas, not a fixed direction. The key is a mark that implies warm relationships through books, learning and sharing.
About inclusion of the word Bookship. We will need a version of the logo that does NOT include the word Bookship, for the app store. Variants that do include the word are welcome, but the primary logo should not contain the word.
Round logos interest us but are not a requirement.
Please don’t use anything that requires a license.
