Shopping for a Change®(SFAC), a web-based non-profit organization, is a fair trade marketplace where artisans,
predominantly women from developing countries, sell their handmade creations, enabling them to earn a sustainable income and lift themselves from poverty.
Our net proceeds subsidize community improvement projects abroad, focused on clean water, healthcare and education, as well as help fund U.S.-based charities of the consumer’s choice.
Individual shoppers choose their nonprofit from a vetted list provided at checkout, while our corporate clients may choose any U.S.-based charity.
About 75% of our customers are individual women between 35-44 yrs. old, although we definitely have women younger and older. About 25% of our customers are men, either buying for themselves or gifts for others, especially the women in their lives. We have begun growing our corporate clientele and this is to where our focus is moving. The buyers for the corporate & event gifts/B2B business gifts are about the same split, 75% women, 25% men. These buyers are attracted by our socially responsible, ethical type gifts, our mission, and our business model. Corporate social responsibility is a big thing now, and that's a niche we fill in related to gifts.
As an industry, we are both a nonprofit and a retail entity.
