Foot Guardian-- Foot Care Accessory Kit
Inventor: Vanessa Jones Briscoe, PhD, MSN, CDE
Many people suffer various foot-related ailments. These ailments range in severity from minor irritations to major dermatological and peripheral vascular disease problems. Foot infections can occur between the toes and/or between the toes and the front of the sole of the foot. These areas are sometimes hard to reach and may be difficult for some people, especially people with vision problems, and individuals who are elderly or obese. These situations can make it hard for people to reach their feet to inspect the affected areas. Additionally, if treatment is needed, it may be delayed and the problem undiagnosed because the person was unaware of the problem and hence did not seek medical attention.
People with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to foot infections, ulcers and many other different foot problems. According to the CDC 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, the total prevalence of diabetes in the United State is 25.8 million children and adults or 8.3% of the population. When a person with diabetes develops foot problems, an ordinary problem can easily worsen into serious complications. These complications are often related to nerve damage, poor blood flow or changes in the shape of the foot. Amputation is often the end result, with more than 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations occurring in people with diabetes. In 2006, about 65,700 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed in people with diabetes.
I have been a Certified Diabetes Educator for over twenty years. During this time I have always given instruction to my patients for foot care that have been set forth by the American Diabetes Association. The message has not change much over the years; “inspect your feet every day and seek medical care early if you have any injury to your feet”. This message is routinely given to the patients with diabetes who have just received his/her diagnoses to the person is being seen for follow-up care; however, we (the healthcare professional) offer no means to perform this task. This is the reason I invented the Foot Care Accessory Kit. It provides a kit for daily inspection and treatment of the feet as requested by his/her healthcare provider.
The Foot-Care Accessory Kit includes a portable carrying case for housing an elongated magnified, lighted mirror with handle. Such a handle enables a user to inspect the lower appendages of his/her foot without needing to bend over. The carrying case includes a plurality of compartments for storing and maintaining a variety of foot care products and tools to aid in foot inspection and treatment.
