Green Health Care Revolving Fund
The overall purpose of this project is to make capital funds available to hospitals to invest in energy efficiency and conservation demand management initiatives through the development of a Green Revolving Fund (GRF) for health care.
With funding from the Ontario Centres for Excellence, the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care is working with the University of Toronto, the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society, The Centre for Social Innovation, Toronto’s University Health Network and our Business Advisory Consortium lead by Trane/Ingersoll Rand, to investigate the development of an alternative funding methodology for energy efficiency projects at Ontario hospitals, specifically a Green Revolving Fund (GRF).
A GRF would provide hospitals with capital funds for energy projects with consistent and well-established returns on investment (ROIs), which would then “revolve” back into the GRF after the achievement of the ROI. This project will develop an operating framework and business case for a health care GRF based on expert advice and feedback of senior health care executives.
The model is currently being trialed in Toronto’s University Health Network via a lighting retrofit project. We hope to soon have a comprehensive social enterprise business model with clear environmental, health and financial advantages (triple bottom line model). Thus, this project will address two critical challenges for Ontario hospitals – the lack of funding for energy efficiency initiatives, and the negative environmental and health impacts of intensive energy use.
Ultimately, our target market is every health care organisation in Canada although this project is funded by an Ontario-based organisation so our focus at this time is only the province of Ontario. Health care organisations include acute and chronic-care hospitals and care facilities and long-term-care/senior’s homes.
The lead organisation for this project is the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, Canada’s premier integrated green health care resource network; a national voice and catalyst for environmental change. (http://www.greenhealthcare.ca)
We are an alliance of committed Canadian health service organisations, associations and environmentally-focused business associates that promotes the adoption of environmentally-friendly and sustainable health care service delivery to complement the compassionate delivery of health care. We are a nationally incorporated not-for-profit organisation.
We encourage the adoption of resource conservation, pollution prevention principles and effective environmental management systems to reduce the Canadian health care system’s ecological impact while protecting human health. We collaborate with health care organisations, facilities, and professionals, governments and non-governmental organisations, the private sector and others to raise awareness of this issue and to increase the capacity of the health care sector to address its environmental issues.
Difficult to choose which 'industry' we represent because we arae both 'environmental' AND 'health care.'
