Green Shoots Foundation is a brand new charitable foundation, based in the UK and in the process of being registered with the UK Charity Commission. We are currently building up our team and setting up the required infrastructure and logistics to start our operations in September 2010.
Green Shoots Foundation's purpose is the prevention or relief of poverty through the promotion of high quality microfinance institutions in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our brand name is "Green Shoots Foundation" - this is what it means:
- green shoots: "any sign of growth, recovery, renewal - association with plant growth"
- foundation: non-profit organisation, charity.
What is microfinance?
"Microfinance is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services.
More broadly, it is a movement whose object is "a world in which as many poor and near-poor households as possible have permanent access to an appropriate range of high quality financial services, including not just credit but also savings, insurance, and fund transfers." Those who promote microfinance generally believe that such access will help poor people out of poverty." (Wikipedia)
