The gang rape in Delhi was a wake up call for us all. Many think this is a country specific issue, and could only happen in a ‘backward’ country like India. This is not true. Brutal attacks are taking place in Hong Kong and other ‘developed nations everyday. We need to wake up to the reality and look no further than our own backyards to recognise that we have a massive problem of our own to work on.
This movement is building upon the One Billion Rising project and aims to:
Raise Awareness: To raise awareness about the prevalence and reality of sexual abuse (#sexualviolence101).
Break the Silence: To emphasize the importance of speaking out against all such abuse including for those who have survived and have suffered in silence (#speakout #breakthesilence).
We are all responsible: To highlight our individual responsibility as bystanders of such abuses and violence and the different capacities in which we can help change things for the better (#CommitToChange #dontbethatguy ).
With the global One Billion Rising project taking place on Thursday, February 14 2013 all over the world, in Hong Kong we want to get the people of Hong Kong to wake up to the reality of sexual abuse so that more people are aware of it, more people are speaking about it and more people try to stop it. This is an opportunity for Hong Kongers to be part of a global movement focused on ending the cycle of violence.
