The examples above are the logos of MMA brands that are relatively popular in the US, Japan, and Taiwan. However, since we are primarily exploring the mainland China market, we would like to deviate from the creative ideas behind these designs as we would like to create a brand identity that is distinctly pan-Chinese.
Our preliminary brand story revolves around the ancient Chinese figure of the "warrior poet," a figure skilled in battle yet also refined, traveling through time and arriving in present-day China as an MMA fighter. We want the name-brand to evoke images of the modern Chinese MMA fighter as the evolutionary descendent of the dynastic Chinese warrior (think : Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; or a Tang dynasty Chinese warrior with the long hair, beaded armor, and large halberd staff).
We are confident that the loud, brash, and more violent images conjured by US brands such as Tapout and Affliction would not gain traction in China and thus are looking for new creative avenues for a logo and eventual design to market to a mass Chinese audience. We also do not want to look similar to the Japanese brands like Hayabusa and Scramble that bring about images of samurai and bushido, ideas that are very poorly received by the Chinese market. We selected the name "FLOW" because it stimulates thoughts of a fluid, less aggressive, and smooth approach to fighting, which is very "Chinese".
The logo should help stimulate these ideas of the brand-story of FLOW MMA. Our target audience are Male ages 15-35.
Also some additional guidelines for the design:
-- First, for the logo, we would only like to include the word "FLOW", not the whole company name of "FLOW MMA".
-- The logo should be clear, bold, and strong without excessive detailing such that if shrunk to a small size will be hard to see.
-- We may be using this logo on apparel so it must be conducive to this purpose.
-- Gradient use is generally not encouraged.
-- Kitchy Chinese-stylized font (like from Chinese take-out boxes) is definitely not encouraged and will not be picked!
-- You must not use any photos, clipart or fonts which may carry licences with them... let's avoid legal trouble down the road!
Thank you for reading this, hope everyone has fun with this contest. We're looking forward to seeing what your creative minds can produce and will give a lot of feedback to designers on the right path. We will definitely award the prize when we see a logo that meshes with our brand story.
