This project strives to bring together the space, tools and community needed to explore, question, create, and critique the built world around us. By provide an opportunity for people to learn and practice new skills, support one another, and show their work; we hope to foster confident problem solvers, and innovators. Theses skills will be critical for tomorrow’s new industrial revolution. We offer memberships, space and classes to people ranging from hobbyists to professionals, engaged in everything from arts to industrial manufacturing. We are a makers space for Portland Maine.

Diseño de inspiración
We intend to target local craftspeople, students and institutions as well as the general community interested in developing their ideas and gaining mastery over the built environment We will do this by communicating with potential clients with a web presence, a blog, local flyers, tradeshows, maker fairs, and public exhibitions. It is our intention to provide the community with an ongoing narrative that regularly make the case for the value of the experience we provide.
The Open Bench Project hopes to position it’s self as the obvious choice for those who are looking to acquire a place to work on their projects with an industrial level shop and supportive community. While Portland is saturated with artist studios few of them offer a co-working environment where people are exposed to the work of others. Exposure to the practice of making is critical for others to imagine doing the work themselves, and while a gallery experience is wonderful at showing off finished projects it is important that members and the public be exposed to the process, as this is both the thing of value and the lure for future customers. The Open Bench Project will promote its members as emerging experts in their craft and provide space and logistics support while encouraging them to teach classes. Further more Portland has other shared workspaces that do embrace the open floor plan model but those are more professional in nature and tend to not lend themselves to the chaotic practices of industrial design.
We are hoping that the design will be simple and straight forward.
Designers who enter should feel encouraged to explain why they think their design is appropriate.
We would like to convey the meaning behind the name, that every one should have access to a place where they can explore, create and share.
