My industry is horse training and teaching horseback riding and horsemanship locally although I do hope to branch out into weekend clinics at other facilities. I do not use force or pain in my training (i.e. no bits, whips, spurs, dominance-based methodology) and incorporate horse psychology and positive reinforcement methods such as clicker training into my program. In addition to riding, we do some trick training and equine agility work (like dog agility). We also incorporate a holistic approach in our care of the horses. My competitors use the traditional approach of bits, whips, spurs, shoes and other training gimmicks along with forceful methods designed to create compliance in the horse, masquerading as partnership. I know, because I once used all those methods myself before I took a long hard look at what I was really doing to the animal. My target clientele are 1) people who think something is missing from their horsemanship, 2) people who are uncomfortable with coercive methods of training and riding and 3) people who have an affinity for horses and want a relationship beyond just riding. As far as values or feelings, I would like something that conveys oneness and harmony with the horse. Respect towards the horse. The horse maintaining his dignity. An alternative "revolutionary" approach to horsemanship. My mission statement is: "We are a facility committed to the concept of Sustainable Horsemanship. That is horsemanship dedicated to an unconventional dominance-free approach to the horse. A place where horses and humans both benefit equally from their relationship, which is based on mutual respect and understanding."
