This contest is for the design of a new logo for the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). There are four possible pieces to this image: (1) highlight the acronym “SIOP” (required), (2) feature the tagline “Science for a Better Workplace” (required; note: this tagline is not yet final, and may be replaced soon by a tagline of similar length – all designs should allow for this substitution), (3) include the name of the society “Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology” (required), and (4) possibly design a graphic logo (optional; the acronym “SIOP” could also be turned into the featured artwork).
ABOUT US (What we do in our field): “Industrial and Organizational Psychology”
We apply the science of psychology to improve the effective functioning of organizations. We specialize in issues such as how to choose the right people for difficult jobs, how to train them quickly and effectively, and how to guide leaders so they create satisfying and desirable workplaces. We are concerned with productivity and efficiency as well as worker well-being and fulfillment. There are 4 key characteristics of our members that describe why people come to us as experts: SCIENCE-DRIVEN, STRATEGICALLY-FOCUSED, SOLUTIONS-ORIENTED, and TRUSTED PARTNERS. ***These characteristics should drive the theme/tone of our new logo.
NOTE: “Industrial” does NOT mean factories, smokestacks, and heavy machinery. Instead, our modern-day members are likely to work in financial institutions, healthcare companies, government agencies, and consulting firms. The use of “industrial” in our name dates back to the 1920s and may not be around much longer (but must be included in the Society name in this logo).
As we may remove the word “Industrial” from our name in the next few years, ideally your designs allow for removing the word “industrial” at a later date. If we do this, the acronym SIOP would become “SiOP,” with a lower-case “i". Designs that enable us to make these changes without commissioning a new logo in the future will be rated higher.
The logo needs to be PROFESSIONAL (sharp, strategic, appealing to modern-day business), CLEVER (conveying one or more of the characteristics above), and slightly more CONTEMPORARY (smart use of lighting effects and artwork - not flat like many other society logos - see attached for examples of what we do NOT want). The logo must give the impression that our Society is strategic, purposeful, and SMART. We want businesses to know that if they work with us, what they’re getting is very CUTTING-EDGE and a strategic advantage. Our members are frequently involved with issues of broad importance, serving as expert witnesses and testifying at government hearings. Our logo must look as appropriate at the top of a legal document in the Supreme Court as it does at the top of our website.
