What do we do:
Yellow House (YH) works within existing government health and education infrastructure providing speech and language therapy services to some of Kenya’s poorest and most stigmatised communities.
Our vision is that there is a universal recognition that all persons with a communication disability should and can have the opportunity to achieve the ability to communicate effectively.
Our mission is to enhance current and planned public health and educative infrastructure to provide continuous, accessible and affordable to speech and language therapy services to anyone with a communication disability across the East African region.
We work in collaboration with other health and education professionals to increase the awareness about disabilities and communication disabilities. We support the development of the profession in a sustainable way and work in partnership with other government and non-government organisations.
We work with both children and adults providing 1:1 services, as well as training of other health and education professionals in ways to support their service users with communication disabilities.
The new name:
Yellow House has recently changed its name from Yellow House Children’s Services, to Yellow House Health and Outreach Services.
We felt it was important to keep ‘Yellow House’ included in the name as it has become a recognised brand. However, ‘Children’s Services’ doesn’t explain what we do, and often people think we have a yellow house somewhere, or that we have a children’s home. This is misconceived perception of what we do is something we are trying to change with a re-brand and new logo.
Why ‘Health and Outreach’:
Health is defined by the World Health Organisation ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ Which essentially informs people what we do. Yes we are predominately a Speech and Language Therapy service provider, however through our services we work towards the definition provided by the WHO.
Outreach looks at the work we do at both a community and government level for advocating for persons with communication disabilities – both in accessing services, but also for the government recognition of the profession.

The Logo design:
- Do NOT include a house
- Simple design that can be used with and without the full name on different stationary/documents
- The colour yellow to feature, but not be the sole colour
- To demonstrate ‘growth’ and ‘community’ if possible. YH is a community based project so I want that to be incorporated into the logo. Growth because by developing a person’s communication you facilitate growth. But, also growth of the profession from one that’s non-existent (13 speech and language therapists in Kenya!!) to a recognised and sustainable profession.
