Not Just Joshing is primarily a personal brand.
Here are the key points about my desired logo:
- it needs to work well as black, white and 1 shade of grey.
- it needs to be equal parts feminine AND masculine.
- it must be relatable to the 25-40-year-old crowd based primarily in North America.
- It must NOT pigeonhole me into any one industry, even though I'm a writer, working in the dating industry as a consultant and coach.
-It will only be used online in web format and maybe some online documents.
- KEYWORDS on style: clean, suave, with some cheekiness and playfulness to it. It's aimed at a more established and professional crowd, with class.
- It will need to represent the trickster archetype because the brand is about having fun, while also having a serious side about learning progressive life lessons.
For inspiration on what makes a good trickster (NOT inspiration for style/design), some of the most well-known tricksters are:
- Bugs Bunny
- Bart Simpson
- Captain Jack Sparrow
- The Court Jester
- Other animal representations of the trickster archetype are the fox, wolf, crow, raven, and coyote.
- Three of my favourites are The Court Jester, the Sly Fox, and the Wily Wolf.
One last note - I REALLY enjoy geometric shape designs, so those will go well with me, but it doesn't have to be symmetrical.

I work in the dating industry as a creative copywriter and ghostwriter for clients and their online dating accounts. While I want to offer writing services generally, Not Just Joshing will fundamentally focus on delivering personal development and relationship building training and consulting.
My chief skillset is in communication. I have developed a training package primarily aimed at men from 25-40 AND another for women from 25-40, who are looking to increase their online dating success by working closely with them to better hone their communication skills.
This training isn't ONLY for romantic connections via online dating sites and apps as many of the learnings can be applied to face to face encounters and would benefit people in all interactions.
More general information:
As of now, my main focus is a logo, however, I will quickly need a brand guide to follow soon after, and a website not long past this. I hope that I can continue to work with the same designer throughout the process once I have awarded a winner to this contest, versus holding multiple contests.
To be completely transparent, I'm at a loss as to how 'Not Just Joshing' becomes a logo. I'm quite happy with the name, it's catchy and represents me well, however, no inspiration comes to me at all in what that might look like as a logo. This could be good news for you designers as it's a clean slate to work with, and no pesky expectations getting in the way.
I seem to be attracted to simple, minimalistic and modern designs, but that being said, a friend of mine suggested Caricatures, and while I don't particularly enjoy that, I have always enjoyed animal logo designs and wondered if the two could be incorporated. To be clear, this isn't a suggestion, I say it more for possible inspiration fearing that like me, 'Not Just Joshing' doesn't provide much inspiration for a specific logo to you as well.
One more thing about me that might help this process... I enjoy humour, I'm not afraid to be myself in that regard. I have a deep affinity for the 'Trickster' archetype - supposedly, they come along when particular ideas are outmoded or outdated and don't specifically subscribe to being 'good' or 'bad' specifically, but work in the shades of grey. However, they usually promote a positive or progressive way of thinking. They tend to have fun while doing so, and I see 'Not Just Joshing' as a name that represents this archetype as well - it's clear with a name like that the brand promotes having fun, but there is a serious side to it as well, which is how I want to help people.
Also, I have a large tattoo of a wolf and another of a fox on either of my shoulders, both are representations of the trickster archetype, however, there are many more representations like the coyote and the crow that I also enjoy.
Again, none of this is to set in stone what I want from a logo, instead, I just want to be able to provide information in the hope that it might spark some specific inspiration.
I have decided to go with a competition because I truly want to see what other people think about the name, and what that could look like as a logo. I am really excited to see what comes out of this, and while it might not be the final iteration of the logo, I hope that it narrows it down my focus quite a bit so that I have a much better idea of how Not Just Joshing will be represented in logo format, and certainly for the foreseeable future.
In that regard, whoever wins this competition could expect to see more work around this logo in future to further hone it, but for now, I'm eager to see what you all come up with.
Thanks for reading this, and I look forward to seeing what comes of this, and following, working with one of you more closely.
