***UPDATED: please read!
SPIRA aims to make stylish bodysuits that make dancers feel confident in (and out) of dance class. We made Spira bodysuits to help dancers feel beautiful and confident in front of the mirror.
We started Spira Dance because we noticed that high-quality activewear companies never made the bodysuits required in many classes and studios. Trendy bodysuits from fashion brands never held up to a dancer’s demands for quality.
We are looking for an unmistakable logo mark that we can incorporate on our apparel - think 'Lululemon's omega' or the 'Nike swoosh'. It should be very easy to recognize and remember, while capturing the meaning of our brand name:
KEY POINTS FOR INSPIRATION --
We called the company SPIRA because it captures the VISCERAL experience of dance, and reflects many aspects of the REASON dancers dance.
“SPIRA” is derived from the latin verb "spirare" which means "to breathe". This word is the root for lots of english words that have to do with the essence of dance:
inspiration/inspire - to breathe in
perspiration/perspire - to breathe through
aspiration/aspire - to breathe on (as in work toward)
respiration/respire - to breathe again
spirit - as in, to have life breathed into you, to "infuse animation" read: movement = to be breathing is to be moving is to be alive
get it ? ;)
All of this is captured subliminally in our name and we want the logo to do the same, visually. Think abstractly!
Some rabbit holes to explore down and maybe play with... the alchemical symbol for air, a japanese enso...
Most people are riffing off the "S" of SPIRA, which is too literal for what we want. I get that there is something spirit-like about the squiggly-ness of an S, but we want to see more out of the box ideas that are connected by meaning, and work on multiple levels.
(For example: what is Lululemon's logo, an omega, a letter A for athletica? The Nike swoosh is a check mark but it is also a visual representation of Nike the Greek Goddess of Victory's wings. It all works symbolically, not literally.)
We really hope this explanation helps you understand what we're hoping for and we really appreciate all the time and effort you've put into the logo submissions thus far! We are really hoping to nail down a designer we work well with as we have multiple things coming down the pipeline as we get closer to launch.
