When someone asks, what’s the alternative, put plainly, the answer is death. That’s the universal answer to simple question with complex nuance.
Things may not be going the way you want them, maybe there’s bad news, or hard work, or disappointing results… but at the end of the day, what’s the alternative? At least you’re alive!
On the surface, this can seem extremely pessimistic to some, but personally I find the exact opposite to be true. I find hope! You may be down… but you are not done! Only death brings that. If there is breathe left, then there is still the ability to take action, find gratitude, and let hope live.
What’s the Alternative? Productions came from my very first professional short film. Through the process of creating it, writing, filming, and eventually producing and finalizing the film we needed a production name. The whole motivation in creating the film was to take control of my career and clarify what was truly important to me, telling stories, creating art, inspiring others, living life! Also, and maybe more importantly, it was a challenge, to the industry but also to myself. I didn’t need to sit around and wait for someone else to initiate or approve or fund or even write a script. I could be the beginning, middle, and end. After all, what was the harm in trying? What did I have to lose? I mean, really, what was the alternative?
I’m proud to say that some years after that first project, this has become more than a mantra to me. It’s now a belief system, my faith. Life is short, and we don’t always have control over the years, but we do control how much, and what, we fill our lives with!
You have dreams, but you’re afraid to chase them? You wonder if people will accept you, support you? What if you fail?
Well, I have one very simple question for you. What’s the alternative?
