The Objective Standard (TOS) is the preeminent source for commentary from an Objectivist perspective, Objectivism being Ayn Rand’s philosophy of reason, egoism, and capitalism. Founded in 2005, TOS publishes a quarterly journal and a weekly newsletter. Our quarterly, The Objective Standard, offers in-depth articles on philosophy, politics, education, history, self-improvement, and the arts; reviews of books, movies, and television shows; and interviews with intellectuals, activists, and politicians.

I’m looking for a black-and-white line drawing inspired by Raphael's famous “School of Athens” painting. The artwork should contain Plato and Aristotle (the two central characters in the original painting) depicted in a way that is recognizably similar to the original, particularly their respective hand gestures and books. They should be centered in this artwork the same as they are in that one. Left of Plato, should be a figure of the philosopher Immanuel Kant, and left of Kant should be Karl Marx. Right of Aristotle, should be a figure of the philosopher John Locke, and right of Locke a figure of Ayn Rand. So, from left to right, the six figures should be: Karl Marx, Immanuel Kant, Plato, Aristotle, John Locke, Ayn Rand. This is the artwork for a magazine cover, so the artwork needs plenty of vertical white space above and below for us to place the title and other cover text. The figures can be depicted in full head-to-toe as they are in Raphael’s painting, or the drawings could fade out a bit below the waist. This is optional, just so long as it doesn’t look like their bodies have been cut in half and are merely floating midair. We don’t need the steps or background structures. I’m uploading a copy of The School of Athens for reference, along with some sample line drawings of some of the figures (which I got from Shutterstock). These are meant to indicate potential styles.

The artwork will fill a significant fraction of that space, and we need the ability to move the art up and down or side to side while laying out the cover. (See example cover, which I’ve included.) The figures should be depicted in full, head-to-toe, as they are in Raphael’s painting. Including some suggestion of the steps and a hint of the background building, like in the original, is preferred. You may stagger the figures a little up and down the steps at your discretion. You may also show only a portion of their bodies, with some figures partially behind others. This will enable you to fit all 6 figures in a relatively tight space. I’m uploading a copy of The School of Athens for reference, along with some sample line drawings of some of the figures (which I got from Shutterstock, and which are not necessarily good drawings). These are meant to indicate a potential style. Please feel free to send a rough sketch of your proposed design in advance of the final product. I’m happy to give feedback along the way.
