Hi designers! My product is an informational guide & workbook that teaches people to improve their handwritten signatures. Their goal when purchasing the book is to learn how to create an awesome, modern, practical signature. The target audience is adults that dislike their current signatures and/or have an interest in creating an elegant, sophisticated signature - especially those that have an interest in pursuing overall handwriting improvement, penmanship, lettering, calligraphy, etc., but who may be intimidated about getting started. Please check out the site at createasignature.com for more information and get a feel for the design of the site.

I need additional samples of swoon-worthy signatures, written in a variety of hands with clear differences in style and personality. These samples will be used within the book, as well as for marketing purposes. The most important thing to keep in mind is that all signature samples should look like something that could be done with a ballpoint pen and used to sign a receipt, a document, or a friend's birthday card. I am requesting a set of five signatures that showcase different design characteristics. The first prize winner will (of course) receive the first place contest prize. If enough great designs are submitted, I will also reach out to up to four additional designers via 1-to-1 projects and offer to purchase their set of signatures for a fee of $50 for the set. Rules: 1. All submissions should be handwritten and monoline. My book teaches modern, practical signatures that can be done with any pen, so there should be no variation in stroke weight in the samples. 2. Signatures should be arranged as though both first and last name are written on one line horizontally (rather than stacked on top of each other). 3. You can create signatures for any name you want, as long as the name is not copyrighted or trademarked (i.e. don't use the names of famous characters or celebrities). 4. Please include 1-2 sentences with EACH signature that you submit, explaining your thinking behind the design, and why you like it. 5. The more variation between your five samples, the better. One could have rounded letters, another angular, some with dramatic scales, some less dramatic, etc. Get creative and go nuts! 6. Final files should be submitted in vector format. Here is a set of design characteristics that I discuss in my book. Submissions that showcase these characteristics in an awesome way will be given preference. You can combine several characteristics in one signature sample, showcase only one characteristic per sample, and/or submit some samples that have none of these characteristics at all. 1. Underlines and/or overlines 2. Inconsistent ascender height (or descender length) on a name with double letters (i.e. the first name "Ella" might have one super tall "l" and one shorter "l" - or the name "Maggie" might have one long "g" and one short "g.") 3. Flourishes extending from the exit stroke of any letter - especially the first or last letter in a name. [Note, flourishes should be kept realistic - they shouldn't extend into drawings of birds or flowers, since this isn't practical for an everyday signature.] 4. Create interesting relationships between letters (i.e. the crossbar of a "t" in the first name extends across the signature to cross the "A" of the last name.) 5. Create a "gradient" signature - it starts larger and slowly gets smaller letter by letter.
If someone is reading my book, this means they care about their signature enough to make an investment of time and money in order to improve it. So while we want to give them samples of things they CAN learn to do WITHOUT use of special tools like calligraphy or brush pens, we still want the samples to be something they can aspire to. Imagine the biggest fans of your art and designs. People who leave comments on your work like "This is AMAZING!!!" "I wish I could do what you do!" - This is the type of audience we're trying to reach. Someone who is a true admirer of beautiful penmanship, but feels intimidated about their own ability to produce something similar. In my book, they learn that art doesn't have to require innate talent - it's a skill that can be acquired through knowledge and practice. So we can assume that they are going to work hard to design and master a signature they really love, and the signature samples should inspire them about what's possible. In my book, I teach that most good signatures have the following characteristics: I. At least moderate legibility II. Confident, fluid strokes III. Consistent slant, sizing, scale, and intelligent spacing of letters IV. Uniqueness and personal touches; character I explain how humans are hard-wired to look for patterns, so we love to see repeated elements - and we delight even more in seeing a pattern intelligently broken (intentional contrast). Here are two specific examples from my Signature Inspo Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/82845…925658116/ - I love this for inspiration, although it is much more flourished than necessary for a practical signature. Still, it's a monoline work of art. The spacing, sizing, and fun interaction of letters is something to aspire to. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/82845…924791690/ - This one is a really great example. The consistency of the letter sizing (x-height, ascender/descender balance looks great), plus the line from the capital "E" through the "t" and the "H" and the partial underline on the last name add a touch of character.
