SCAN will be an insider's look at what it takes to sometimes achieve great art. The trials and tribulations of one of Dennis Oppenheim's lesser-known works. In the end, it was rebuilt 4 times before it was eventually destroyed. Never being to the scale the artist had imagined (it began as 100% scale in Ohio, but was only 70% when built in Indiana), and never possessing the motors needed for the moving parts, SCAN's story is sad, yet triumphant as it continues to defy the odds and find new homes. Look to space film posters such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien for your inspiration. Am wanting SCAN on the poster to have a dark almost ominous feel to it. As though it were strong and powerful and much more than metal pieces. Like it is a living and breathing creature that has a great mystery that is somewhat spooky and scary about it. I do not want to see the entire sculpture in the poster. Only bits and pieces of it. My favorite sections are the shields (curved reflective pieces on the tracks). Am picturing perhaps one of the shields with an image projected on it such as the artist. I will upload all kinds of diagrams and photos. Take your pick of the bunch. Also, SCAN's main purpose, figuratively, is to scan the environment around it and record the day-to-day lives of people. It is a voyeur in every sense of the word. At night, it uses the energy it has stored from the sun to project the images it has recorded during the day onto its shields. Here is another brief description as to what it does:
The protuberances at the top do rotate 360 degrees and can move up or down, like a canon on a tank, depending on the direction of what SCAN is surveilling. SCAN is capable of telescoping up, that is, it can raise one of the instruments in the central core up to aprox. 30 feet together or independently.
The springs are designed to provide cushion and isolate the device from perturbations from seismic events (earthquakes, vibrations from trucks etc. remember, the device is exquisitely sensitive!) or from ballistic concussion due to incoming artillery or missiles.
Yes, it is capable of intercepting and detecting telemetry from telecommunication via microwave, satellite, cable etc. or discriminating live recording of sound and image within 1000 feet. It is Inferred and heat sensing, as well as night vision capable. The reflector shields on tracks are capable of moving independently depending on the direction and declination of the sun. At times any one of the four may move only part way. At night, or any time, they can be drawn around the central core and protect it like four parts of a cylindrical wall.
The projector is located at the base of the central core. The image is rear screen projected onto the moving walls of material or this material may be substituted for a high-tech flexible flat screen high def. material which is light emitting just like a flat screen on your TV. The four screens are also able to function not as reflectors at night, but as flat screen video monitors in their own right, which may themselves independently display video or still photographic imagery.
Anything which SCAN detects and records can be "played back" at night. Anything from someone on a toilet to a couple making love might be revealed. There are no secrets which SCAN can't divine. Yes, diversity of images and "secrets" displayed, would be good.
The walls are 9 feet high.
The "spring in the photo, is actually a high gain antenna which will telescope up when and if needed.
