Here at Marquis we wish to eliminate the use of plastic bags. The idea is that people would bring their reusable bags or buy the ones we'll have at the store. The key thing with reusable bags is that the environmental gains are greatest when they are consistently used multiple times instead of a single-use bag.
We are also charging 5 cents for plastic bags.
Rather than looking at the fee as a profit motive, our aim, as coordinated
with the City of Vancouver’s plastic reduction strategy, is fee-as-deterrent.
Studies in other cities with similar reduction strategies, such as London UK,
show that a 5p charge reduced the number of plastic bags by at least 40%
(Source). Other jurisdictions already have mandatory plastic bans in place, with one
coming soon to Vancouver. At that point we hope to have already
transitioned to no plastic bags whatsoever, although we will be offering
affordable reusable alternatives in their place.
We expect most of our customers will appreciate the fee as a demonstration
that our store is green friendly and by shopping with us they are shopping
to save the planet. Especially because we'll stock some fabulous re-usable bags as
A good resource is the “Bring Your Bag” guide for BC retailers developed by Retail Council of Canada together with Recycle BC. It has the messages we are trying to convey with this initiative. You can find that here: https://recyclebc.ca/wp-content/upl…ersion.pdf
Recycle BC is also currently conducting a #BringYourBag campaign that and they also provide some templates to use for signs. Might help with ideas. You can find those here: https://recyclebc.ca/reduce-single-use/
