The homepage should display new content in a two column design per the wireframe attached. Each piece of content is its own "note". Each full sized note contains a type-specific image header (Talk Show, Op-Ed, Fiction, News, etc), a Headline, and then a 50-150 start of, or excerpt from the longer article. In addition, half-sized notes are needed which in some cases will be used for display ads, or as teasers for upcoming/related content. "Windowshop" means "display ads" There should be a space above the fold for a SoundCloud(.com) widget, which is 100x450
The type-specific image headers will be color coded with a tint and be more textural than image - Half of the space indicated on the wireframe will be a small "Tip widget" - You can see examples of these at coinwidget.com and hear a talk I recently gave on the topic here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4tgNi5gle0
The design should be information dense but not too crowded. ArsTechnica.com and Wired.com are a little too crowded.
If the purpose of the homepage is to be a broad and inclusive "macro" view of our content, The other page in this design is the "Content" page - which focuses on the "micro" view - The specific piece of content and incorporates suggested related posts, the most recent episode of the talk show in an embedded player, the artists name and tip jar. and in-stream wide-not-tall advertisements every 3/4s screenlength
