The Australian financial planning industry is evolving and going through lots of change. Professional Planner is the leading voice for financial planners where they can learn about industry standards, get news, information, debate and develop new ideas. Professional Planner currently produces a monthly magazine, website, three weekly email newsletters and an iPad app. The weekly emails alert to new content on the website, magazine content is made available on the website one month after publication, and the app incorporates special feature content originating from both website and magazine editorial, as well as app-only content (see http://www.proplanner.com.au/ipad for more information). Our publications care about professionalism and aim to deliver well-informed and authoritative content to financial planners. We need our website and email newsletters to reflect this. Our audience ranges from tech-savvy gen-Y financial-planners, through to the complete opposite – so the overall design needs to be flexible and easy to use, appealing to all types of users independent of their technical ability. We also have a social media community we want to incorporate (which operates much like LinkedIn) – however this is likely phase 2 – but please incorporate / take in account with your ideas while designing.

• Colour guidelines: Brand shape and fonts are fixed, colours can change to reflect sections / categories / types of content etc. • Textures: Soft gradients / textures / shadows should be used subtlety to add to depth to the site. Remember to ensure the transparency of the site will be compatible with contextual skinning campaigns running in the background / sides of the site. • Shapes: Try and incorporate components of the “PP” logo (curves and swish of the small “p” throughout the site / editorial content where you can. • Photography: We often do not have photography to accompany articles and therefore rely on stock images – which can often be dull / not very well connected to the editorial. Therefore please incorporate a range of images as currently used on the site in your design – and we would appreciate design ideas you have that would help solve this problem of not having accompanying photos/graphics/media for articles. Please note all current articles have associated featured images of 400x200 pixels (2:1 ratio) and therefore it is necessary that anywhere an article appears within a list / on a category page across the site, the images are 400x200 pixels or less (for example in the 300 wide columns supplied in the mockups the images are 300x150 pixels).

HOME We want engagement to be key and we want to grab audience attention and make sure they notice our other content when visiting the site. This page should attract readers to all online and magazine categories and types of content available (polls, video, articles, press releases, etc.) and we want to create and attract feedback elements including social feeds / engagement / most comments / most popular articles / any other ideas you have regarding ways to get people to read more content (see attached example mockup). The navigation should be a horizontal two-tier system, with the first tier items including: Home, Articles, Videos, Apps, Magazine, Events, Learning and my News. The second tier will vary for each (see attached site map). Throughout the site all pages should allow for the same advertising units as currently used (MREC: 300x250; Leaderboard: 728x90; Billboard: 970x250 expanded, 300x31 contracted; and contextual skinning/theming of the background) as well as any new rich-media advertising units you think may complement the design. The design should be responsive so that if a given advertising unit is empty, content would move to replace it. Please design for a maximum width of 1000 pixels and please also supply / show how your design will carry across to a mobile friendly version with a width 320 pixels. 2. CATEGORY PAGES Highlight the range of content available in a specific drilled down category (within the online section or the magazine section of the site). Each category page should be nothing like the current ‘category’ area of the website which simply lists all the old categories. We have reduced the number of online categories to seven: – Regulation – Best Practice – Investment – Superannuation – Technology – Risk – The Profession – Other (incorporate older categories) Each category page should have different types of eye-catching ‘in-points’ – different ways to get readers into different content – whether it be an article, video, poll, most popular, social activity, recent comments another reader has made, all to do with one particular topic of content (see attached example mockup). We are still deciding the exact magazine categories, but design with this in mind – magazine category pages must have a flexible design that differs in “feel” from the online categories, but will the same functionality in terms of incorporating different types of video/polls/etc. Please submit a design for both an online category page and a differing magazine category page which will apply to the categories above – maximum width of 1000 pixels and please also supply / show how your design will carry across to a mobile friendly version with a width 320 pixels. 3. ARTICLE The most important page of the site. Our three x times a week email newsletter drives the majority of traffic to our site so the article pages are usually the first page viewed. Online articles range from 400–600 words. We’ll need a range of visual elements to enhance and integrate with the text – including a live poll relevant to the topic, comments from other readers, social activity, quotes from the text, and infographics + interactive photo galleries + videos where applicable (see attached mockup). The main aim is to break up the text, increase visual variety within the article and increase engagement with the interactive components of the site – with the ultimate goal of attracting readers to other pages once they have finished reading (or partially finished) the article they came to view. Magazine article pages will use the same template as online article pages. Please design for a maximum width of 1000 pixels and please also supply / show how your design will carry across to a mobile friendly version with a width 320 pixels. 4. ABOUT / EVENTS / ADVERTISING / COMPANY We also need a layout for more generic content such as ‘about the publication’, ‘events calendars’, ‘advertise with us’, ‘company information’, etc. This layout will also need the ability to incorporate other ‘modules’ or ‘components’ of the site as necessary and where relevant. For example the same twitter feed, video, etc used in other places throughout the site. Please design for a maximum width of 1000 pixels and please also supply / show how your design will carry across to a mobile friendly version with a width 320 pixels. 5. EMAIL NEWSLETTER While not strictly a website page, this will be a crucial part of the design of our site. Our three x weekly email newsletter must reflect the look and feel of the new site – both in terms of style, titles, fonts, layout, main navigation links and display of multi-media / social links etc – as much as possible (given the limitations of HTML rendering in email clients). Based on our advertising model allowing MREC advertising units (300x250 pixels) to feature both on the website and the email newsletters. Ideally the design will allow a flexible number of ads to be used on this newsletter, mainly between 2-3 MRECs. The design will also need to allow for a leaderboard (728x90 pixels) as per the current design. The current email newsletter is 750pixels wide, but we are willing to experiment up to 1000pixels wide if necessary. We’d would like a very clean, clear design with visual ‘in-points’ to attract different types of readers to different types of content. This site must be HTML5 friendly for iOS devices. • Overall design must be flexible for advertising placement and not look ‘empty’ when ad inventory is not full, while also allowing extra ads to be added to columns / areas as necessary.
