The homepage is the central hub of the whole site. It's where visitors will view the latest news, forum posts and games. The site runs on WordPress.
The top (main) nav should be:
News - Forums - Games - Submit
When "News" is hovered we need a smart-looking sub nav that contains all of the main WordPress categories:
Blogs, Books, Code, Demos, Games, Graphics, News, Tutorials, Videos
The design should cope with this list being able to expand in future (within reason).
There should be a strong side-bar that can contain typical side-bar content: search box, banner ads, newsletter sign-up and other types of free-form content. See current site for examples.
The main bulk of the page is where the articles live. Nearly every article has an image associated with it, often quite large in dimensions. They have quite long titles, often wrapping to two "lines". The body copy is generally a couple of paragraphs and always finishes with a link. It's essential that the link in every single article is incredibly prominent / easy to see. The URL itself doesn't have to be displayed, it could just be a "Click here to read the full article" graphic, but it needs to be clear.
There should be a good healthy amount of white space / separation between the articles. It should be easy to scroll the page and see the divide between each piece.
The page footer should have room for a good amount of text, including some links we'll hard-code in, company details, contact details, etc.
The goal of the whole site is for developers to quickly browse new and interesting articles and click to read them, or to participate in the forum we'll be opening next month. Both are equally important.
