FreeBrowser is a free Android app that lets users access any website they want to, regardless of censorship restrictions. FreeBrowser was launched in March, 2015 and currently has over 100,000 active monthly users. FreeBrowser is available all around the world and works in countries that practice severe online censorship, including China and Iran. FreeBrowser is a product of GreatFire.org. GreatFire.org is working to end online censorship. We operate several projects around this idea. Most of the projects are based in China but FreeBrowser is available everywhere in the world. We want to keep FreeBrowser free to use, but we need the support of others to be able to pay the costs associated with offering this service for free.

WHAT WE WANT DESIGNED: We want a one page website that is focused on donations to help pay for the operating costs associated with FreeBrowser. We have secured freebrowser.org but we do not have an active website. The winning design will be used as the home page for FreeBrowser. LOGO FOR THIS CONTEST: The logo for FreeBrowser is ATTACHED to this brief. GOAL OF THE PAGE: When visitors to our website land on our page, we want them to understand what we are doing, feel that they can help with their donation and feel safe knowing that the donation process is secure and that their donation will be used in a proper way. VISUALS AND FEELINGS OF THE DONATION PAGE: • Upon arriving at this website, visitors should immediately understand that this mobile application facilitates free access to information. • The use of images of protests and uprisings will help to convey this sentiment. • Visitors to the site should feel angry about restrictions and limits to free speech - angry enough that they would want to support the continued operation of FreeBrowser by making a donation. IMAGERY TO USE: Sample images of protests can be found on Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/search/?text=protests&license=4%2C5%2C9%2C10). • Please use images that can be used for commercial purposes (on Flickr this is described as “Commercial use and mods allowed”). • You may source images from other websites if you wish, as long as they also allow for free commercial use. • When you submit your designs, if you use any images, please make sure you include links to the sources of these photos and notes on how the photo can be used. As FreeBrowser will be used by different people in different countries, please make sure that if you use images of protests and protesters, that these images show a cross-section of different types of people (for example, please do not just use images of Chinese people protesting, as the app will be used by people all over the world, not just in China). If you think that you can convey the above image through the use of ILLUSTRATION or through any other means, then please do so. It is not 100% necessary that photos be used on this website. What is 100% necessary is that visitors to the website should feel angry about restrictions and limits to free speech and feel compelled to make a donation to support FreeBrowser. -- UNDERSTANDING THE APP (what we are collecting money for): The mobile application is and will be used by people in countries that impose restrictions on freedom of speech. When people are able to access information freely for the first time, they may learn about things that happened in their country for the first time. Sometimes, this might lead to protest. In some cases, as with the Arab Spring, this can lead to governments being overthrown.

We want a one page design for our website. The website will be available in multiple languages including but not limited to English, Chinese and Arabic. This landing page should be split up into the following 9 sections: 1. The top of the page: • Will be the header and should contain the logo for FreeBrowser. • We only have an icon for FreeBrowser which does not actually contain the words “FreeBrowser”. • Please add some stylized words to the icon for FreeBrowser. The top of the page should also contain: - two download links for FreeBrowser - one that works in China and one that works everywhere in the world. - a menu that will allow visitors to choose the language for the website. social sharing buttons for Twitter and Facebook 2. This space will be used for us to explain in a few sentences how we need donations to be able to continue to offer FreeBrowser. • This section should contain images or illustrations that that make visitors to the website feel angry about restrictions and limits to free speech. • In the future we may also embed a video in this space. We may include some or all of the following messages: – Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram are all blocked in China Do something about it – “Freedom of opinion and expression” was declared a human right in 1948. 67 years later, the most populous country on our planet still does not have it. Do something about it – “China was the world’s worst abuser of internet freedom in the 2015 Freedom on the Net survey” (Freedom House) Do something about it – China is ranked #176 out of 180 countries in the 2015 World Press Freedom Index Do something about it 3. This is a section where we update visitors to the website on our targets. For example, this section might say: – "FreeBrowser wants to provide free and uncensored internet access for 100,000 users by January 1, 2016. Donate now: https://freebrowser.org ". There should be social sharing buttons for Twitter and Facebook next to this section so that visitors to the site can easily share this target on social media. 4. This section should contain the choices for donation amounts for visitors to the website (similar to the website examples provided earlier in this brief). Each donation amount helps to provide uncensored internet access for a certain number of users. The donation amounts and the number of internet users supported are: USD 2 = 10 users sponsored USD 5 = 25 users sponsored USD 10 = 50 users sponsored USD 15 = 75 users sponsored USD 20 = 100 users sponsored USD 30 = 150 users sponsored Other amount The donation amounts can be shown as boxes, on a slider bar, or however the designer wishes to show them. Social media sharing buttons should also be included here. 5. Visitors are then offered a choice of payment methods including Visa, MasterCard, UnionPay, PayPal and BitCoin. 6. This section should contain two columns. The left hand column will contain public messages from our "sponsors" - those who have made a donation and who have left a message for us. The right hand column will contain user feedback about FreeBrowser which will be generated automatically from the Google Play pay for our application (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.greatfire.freebrowser). 7. The next section should allow visitors to our site to leave us a message. Visitors should also be given the option of choosing this to be a public (seen by other visitors to the site) or a private (only seen by GreatFire.org) message. When users enter their message into a text box, they can choose whether or not the message is public or private. They should be able to click a "Submit" button so their message appears on the page. Users should also have the option to be able to edit their message after they have clicked "Submit". There also should be social sharing buttons for Twitter and Facebook next to the text box so that users can share their message on social media if they want to. 8. This section will contain our FAQ and will provide a list of questions. When visitors to the site click on one of the questions, the response should "open up" below the question. A list of sample questions might include: What is FreeBrowser? Why do you need sponsors? Who are you targeting? What are your goals? How many users do you have? What if FreeBrowser is blocked? What content does FreeBrowser promote? Who are you? 9. The bottom of the page will be the footer and should be divided into three columns. The left hand column will contain the GreatFire.org logo. The GreatFire.org logo is attached to this brief (please note that we are not currently using this logo on our website but it will launch soon). The middle column should contain information to sign up to our newsletter and should also display the latest tweets from the GreatFire.org Twitter account (https://twitter.com/GreatFireChina). The right hand column should contain the following links: Languages Contact Us GreatFire.org Twitter
Lo que debe evitarse
Do not base the design of this page on the design of greatfire.org. Do not use images of desktop computers, laptop computers or tablets in the design. Using images of mobile phones is fine. Do not use "happy" images. FreeBrowser is not a "happy" product. If you use one image on the page, please make sure that people from all over the world can identify with that image. People in China may not identify with an image of protesters in Iran. If you use multiple images on the page, please make sure that the images you use reflect a wide variety of people from around the world. FreeBrowser works in every country and is being used in many countries.
We have attached a rough layout of the website, however, if designers feel that there is a better way to organise the information, please offer us your suggestions. The design of this website may also influence the future design of the GreatFire.org website.
