THE BRIEF: I want to create a logo that is intended to abstractly represent an opal gemstone for a blockchain-based creative media company that works directly with independent creators and interfaces with their audience. The emotions I am trying to invoke are described below!
THE GENERAL STYLE: I envision the base color being a subtle off-white, rather than a harsh, perfect white. This is trying to represent an opal gemstone, and in real life, there is no such thing as #FFFFFF. Inside, I envision colors that include aquamarine blues, minty light greens, soothing lavenders, and/or other colors depending on your own personal interpretation of opals. The colors inside should seem somewhat organic and overlapping, potentially geometric depending on how you want to include them, but the exact inside of the logo is generally up to you based on what you think works within these loose guidelines. I am currently envisioning the colors taking on a more pastel hue, but like everything in this competition, if you think it looks better another way or with more vibrant colors, do that! Real opals are very vibrant, and I would love to see vibrance, I just don’t want the logo to look as if it is radioactive. When in doubt, see my attached pictures of opals, or look up opals for yourself online. Be inspired by their natural beauty and channel that into the logo in your own personal, creative way!
THE AESTHETIC: I think I would like the general aesthetic of the opal to incorporate themes of ancient Chinese/Japanese artwork and calligraphy. You should NOT try and perfectly copy/mimic those styles, but rather, embrace the ideals/aesthetic of a watercolor painting on rough parchment, something that feels more organic and flowing, rugged/imperfect yet still naturally beautiful, rather than the perfectly straight and clean lines of today's modern minimalist logos. Again, whatever that means to you personally, follow your vision. The word "Vopal" at the bottom should continue this aesthetic. The font for the word should still be neat and orderly, easy to read and bold, but it should be more stylistic (as if it was drawn with a master’s calligraphy brush rather than written with a standard type font). Make sure it is separate, though, as the logo of the opal will mostly be used standalone. Additionally, to help you understand the context for the aesthetic, this logo will normally be used over dark backdrops so that its off-white color and internal highlights really pop and stand out.
THE FINAL THOUGHTS: Opals found in nature are truly special in that the internal pattern/coloration of each gemstone is completely unique. In a similar way, I want this logo to represent uniqueness, to represent something that is beautiful, luxurious, and most importantly, one of a kind. Opals are also expensive, sophisticated, and are incredibly valuable. However, unlike other gemstones such as diamonds which are perfectly cut, totally clear, and completely homogeneous, opals are artistic, richly colorful, deep, and varied. The application for this logo will be in the creative space for creative people, and so although it must invoke some luxurious emotions, it must still always appeal to our innate creativity and to the ideals of individual self-expression! I have attached reference images of artwork and calligraphy, as well as images of actual opals, but please pull up your own pictures of each of these things online to use as personal guidance. Additionally, I have attached a couple of images that I drew myself of what I ~very roughly~ envision the logo to be. Don't take it as gospel, just inspiration. As you can see, my drawings are quite ugly, hence my opening up this competition to you!
FOR YOU: I am happy to answer any questions you may have about this design or its intended purpose, and your feedback, collaboration, and independent opinion/input are always welcome. As always, you are the artist! Your creative input on what you think looks good and special is most valuable. The above criteria are simply suggestions on how to help achieve what I think is a special logo, and while you should certainly incorporate some of my opinions into your design, it is still your design at the end of the day! If you need to break the mold to create something amazing or adjust my aesthetic guidelines to develop the creative vision you think I want, then do it! I cannot stress enough, I simply want a unique logo that invokes the emotions I listed above, something that can be identifiable to our brand, how you achieve that is up to you. I look forward to seeing all your results.
Lastly, this should be in a vector format if possible, so that it can be infinitely rescaled to many sizes. I understand vector files provide some limitations, so please do not hesitate to make necessary design choices to fit within those limitations.
