The Structures and Materials Research Laboratory (SMRL) at the University of Southern California (USC) specially designed to conduct material and structural testing, especially for making buildings and structures more resilient during extreme events such as earthquakes. The laboratory is equipped to conduct research to improve the safety, sustainability and serviceability of built infrastructure (think bridges, highways, skyscrapers, buildings of all kinds).

We basically want the four latters “SMRL”, although our whole name is “Structures and Materials Research Laboratory”.
We want people to know this is a high tech lab, and it is related to construction, materials, such as concrete, masonry, steel, and composite. It does not need to show all of these, though.
Since we are in the construction business, we want the “feel” of the logo to be reliable, strong precision, trustworthy as well as cutting edge technology (think robots doing construction, etc).
